The Penny

You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels, etc.

This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about.

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend.

The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live.

The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so she was enjoying herself immensely!

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts.

Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her.

Finally, she could stand it no longer!

She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and was the point of this?

"Look at it." He said.

"Read what it says."

She read the words "United States of America."

"No, not that; read further."

"One cent?"

"No, keep reading."

"In God we Trust?"

"Yes!"

"And?"

"And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it!

God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS still in God at that to God; that I do trust in Him.

For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me.

Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change.

I read the words, "In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message.

It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful!

And, God is patient...

Have a blessed day!!

Believe In Santa Claus

I love passing things on like this! This is the TRUE MEANING OF GIVING AT CHRISTMAS!

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered.

"Even dummies know that!"

My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her "world-famous" cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to be true.

Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus?" she snorted.... "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad!! Now, put on your coat, and let's go."

"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second world-famous cinnamon bun. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars.

That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car."

Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments, I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for.

I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class.

Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out to recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough; he didn't have a good coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!

I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that.

"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.

"Yes, ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby."

The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" on it.

Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa's helpers.

Grandma parked down the st reet from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."

I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.

Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were -- ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

I still have the Bible, with the coat tag tucked inside: $19.95.

May you always have LOVE to share, HEALTH to spare and FRIENDS that care...And may you always believe in the magic of Santa Claus!

Broken Heart

Oh my goodness! I knew that one day Bud and JJ would part ways, but I had no idea how bad Bud's heart would be broken. . .

It is safe to say that JJ was/is Bud's first love. . .They had been a "couple" for almost a year. . .My baby showered the girl with beautiful gifts and kindness. . .I was told many times by other moms how good he was to her - opening the doors, carrying her books, etc.

I hate that Bud's heart is broke and last night he said a lot of things in anger. . .I want the two of them to stay friends. Right now he speaks hatred - I don't like that. . .I know that his heart will mend in time. . .

My greatest fear - - - what kind of girl will he date next? ! ! ! I'm IN NO HURRY TO FIND OUT! ! !

Bet you Forgot About this. . .

Remember Bud's truck? Here's the before the wreck - clear back on July 28th. . .

Then we had the repair begins. . . .sanding, etc.

The repair is still ongoing - - - but the cab HAS PAINT! ! ! ! Yeah!

Isn't this cool? I didn't get to go see it with Bud and Birddog (studying - UG) - but they say the blue is absolutely gorgeous! I knew when Mr. Hankey said that the blue was pretty that we had chose the right color. . .(You gotta know the guy. :) - he doesn't say things like that. . .)

He still has the bed to work on - but hopefully the end of this week we can bring the cab home and start re-wiring all the power to the windows and Bud has bought neons to put under it. . .
Then when we take it back - we hope to be able to surprise Bud with the FINALLY FINISHED PROJECT. . . This has taken quite a bit longer than we planned - but I think the wait will be WELL WORTH IT!

Finals Week - please forgive me for not visiting your blogs. . . I will be hit and miss with my postings this week - but will be thinking about you! ! !

What a Production

We visited my sister's church yesterday to see their Christmas program. . .My neice and nephew are part of the childrens choir and my nephew had a small speaking part. . .

Some of the music was upbeat along with the traditional Christmas music.

This was one of the neatest programs I have ever been to. . .My favorite part was when the little ones came in to set up the nativity scene. . .They were so cute!

The Blogging Chicks Carnival this week is being hobsted by Rebecca at Of Making Many Books. The theme is Holiday Laughter, or Laughter in General.

This carnival is open to everyone. Enjoy! There are so really good stories!

Scared of Santa

At first this story isn't very funny, but the ending made it worth it.

For years after Birddog's sisters had kids, Birddog's dad dressed up as Santa. . .The kids always had a blast when Santa would show up at the front door and have a present for each one of them to open. Santa would hug everyone at the gathering and wish everyone a Merry Christmas as he was leaving. . .The smiles were just wonderful. . .

When we had our kids Birddog's dad dressed up till Bud was about 3 (Scoop was 1). We showed up for Christmas and Grandpa wasn't dressing up. . .Now our oldest is 7 years younger than the youngest of Birddog's sister. . .Birddog threw a fit! We didn't get to enjoy Santa showing up to the door that evening. . .

The next morning as we were getting ready to have Christmas with my family (at our house) - Santa showed up at our front door. . .We answered the door and could hear Santa's big Ho, Ho, Ho. . .Bud ran up to see who was at the door and got HUGE eyes. . .as Santa entered the house, Bud's eyes got bigger and he grabbed holt. . .Once Santa was completely into the living room and started coming towards him, Bud made a bee-line for his bedroom and hid! It took a lot of coxing to get him to come out and see what Santa had forgot to leave! - - -It was so funny! My mom and I chuckle about this every Christmas. . .

This made it all worth not getting Santa the night before!

Finally posting my tag

Tiggerlane tagged me several days ago and I am just now getting around to responding with "My Top Ten Simple Pleasures."
Here we go:
1. Family time which is difficult with everything we have going.
2. Listening to Birddog tell me about a prank he or one of the guys at work pulled.
3. Listening to hunting stories when my boys come in from a day out in the field.
4. Getting a good grade on a research paper or test.
5. A CLEAN HOUSE!
6. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for graduation.
7. Watching my boys play basketball, football, baseball and anything else they wind up in.
8. Laughing with my friends over silly things.
9. Giving and knowing someone will benefit.
10. When Birddog is actually romantic. . . :)

I know everyone is busy, so anyone that would like to do this you've been tagged. :)

Bud's First Game of the Season. . .

Finally, got the pics to load! ! !

Wednesday, December 06, 2006

Yeah! Start the Season with a Win!

Wow! What a game! ! ! Neck in neck the whole 4 quarters! ! ! Bud scored, but I couldn't tell ya how many points he had. . .lol - I got to involved in the game. . .

We played in Blackwell and TALK ABOUT SOME RUDE FANS! We sat on the Visitor side - like good visitors - and were swarmmed with Blackwell students who - I can not believe - part of them would yell "Ref" and the others would yell "You Suck" when a call was made on the Blackwell team. . .Then they would yell "Bullshit". . .They would yell "Airball" and I can't even remember what else. . .I was fit to be tied!

After the Girls varsity game the girls came over to our side and joined the kids that were already there - which they moved into the section of Blackwell kids - moving them on down the blechers - thank goodness. . .One of the girls from Blackwell started getting all huffy with our kids and I was fixing to step in - enough was enough - they should go to their side right? LOL - actually they need to learn proper sportsmanship!

Scoop helped a Buddy film and I guess there was some mom up there that was a total Bitch. . .She started telling the boys that they needed to move the camera and they needed to learn some respect. . .Scoop and TrevDog wouldn't tell me where she was. . .I'm telling you, I had had enough. . .What would happen if we treated their people like that when they came to our school? THEY ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE A FEW THINGS TO LEARN! I still can't believe they allow them to act that way!

Anyway - they had to take a loss with both the boys and girls games - Girls 25 - 23 - Boys 48 - 45. . .Yeah! Longhorns! ! ! !

Pictures to come - Blogger won't upload them. . .

    YES, We Got Snow!

Oh, I love it! What a perfect way to start December!

The boys are out of school and are enjoying getting to sleep in. . .

Julie, I hope you are able to stay home and not make that drive to Stillwater. . .

Bud, got upset with Birddog and I because we wouldn't let him going running around. I remember being the same way and my parents telling me, "It's not you we worry about, it's all the other drivers." Poor Bud, some of that stuff did stick in my head. :)

    Here's wishing you all a warm Friday! ! !
